Hand Dryers in Schools: FAQ
This page answers the questions K-12 facilities teams ask most about hand dryers: whether they're hygienic, how to meet ADA, how to stop vandalism, what electrical they need, how repairs and warranty work, and how to buy without a formal bid. Each answer links to a fuller guide.
FAQ
Are hand dryers hygienic for schools?
Yes. The CDC's handwashing steps say to dry hands "using a clean towel or an air dryer." Washing with soap for at least 20 seconds is what matters most. See CDC: About Handwashing.
Why do schools switch from paper towels to hand dryers?
Mostly to cut custodial workload: no refills, less litter, and fewer towels stuffed into toilets. Paper towels are also a common tool for restroom vandalism. See stopping school bathroom vandalism.
What should we look for in a school hand dryer?
A stainless cover with security screws, no buttons, ADA-compliant projection, on-wall repairability, fast parts and a cooperative contract. See best hand dryers for schools.
How far can a hand dryer stick out under ADA?
No more than 4" where its leading edge is between 27" and 80" above the floor. See ADA hand dryer requirements.
How high should we mount dryers for younger students?
Pinnacle recommends 32" to the sensor for ages 4–7, 36" for 7–10, 40" for 10–13 and 44" for 13–17.
Surface-mount or recessed?
Surface-mount for retrofits; recessed for new builds and high-abuse rooms. See recessed vs surface-mount and recess kits vs true recessed.
What electrical do Pinnacle dryers need?
120 VAC on a dedicated 20 A circuit per dryer, properly grounded, with a GFI breaker recommended. See electrical requirements.
How fast do they dry hands?
The P3-12S cut sheet lists 12–15 seconds.
What happens when one breaks?
Pinnacle dryers have five wear parts, fixable on the wall, and parts ship within 24 hours. See parts and repair.
What does the warranty cover?
10 years on parts and 3 years on the circuit board, for the original purchaser. Vandalism, wear, storms and improper installation are excluded. See the warranty page.
When should we replace rather than repair?
When parts are discontinued, failures repeat or the unit isn't ADA compliant. See the replacement guide.
Can we buy without a formal bid?
Pinnacle is on TIPS contract 250503 (through 07/31/2030), and on BuyBoard contract 747-24 (Custodial Supplies and Equipment). Check your district's purchasing policy.
Is there volume pricing?
Yes. Quantity discounts are available on orders of 20 or more dryers. POs are accepted with approved credit.
Where are Pinnacle dryers made?
Statesville, North Carolina. Pinnacle has been making hand dryers for over 30 years.
